Football: Frenchman Anelka to continue career in India

ISTANBUL

Former French international and Fenerbahce player, Nicolas Anelka, agreed to play for Indian Super League club  Mumbai City FC on Monday.

According to the statement made on the Indian club's official Twitter account, the 35-year-old French forward Anelka will play for the club to contribute to the development of football in the Indian Super League.

"I'm pleased to join Mumbai City FC and very [excited] in joining Indian Super League," wrote Anelka on his Twitter account on Monday.

Anelka has traveled quite a bit during his career, playing for such illustrious clubs as Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Juventus and Fenerbahce in 2005.

He recently left the English Premier League's West Bromwich Albion after a 5-match ban for making a "quenelle" gesture to celebrate a goal. The "quenelle," coined by controversial French comedian Dieudonne M'bala M'bala, is viewed as an inverted Nazi salute by many. The footballer player had argued that he was only showing support for his friend Dieudonne, who has had numerous run-ins with French law for alleged anti-Semitic statements.

Anelka joins fellow French internationals Robert Pires and David Trezeguet in India. Eight teams will play in the Indian Super League, which debuts in October and lasts until December.
