Director General Soner Canko of Interbank Card Centre (BKM) has stated that they analyzed the growth in card volume in details.
Canko said, "Accepting cards in trade became widespread. People used to be more cautious about it. We closed 2011 with 2 million POS (Point of Sale) machines however I can say that in 2012, we added 100,000 more of the devices. With the advancing technology and cooperation of banks, a POS device can serve more than one bank."
Anadolu Agency (AA) Finance Editorial Desk on Friday hosted Director General of BKM, Canko as part of the live meetings of the finance desk.
Canko assessed the latest developments in banking card sector and the developments of the Turkish Interbanking Card Centre at AA's Istanbul office.
He mentioned that, this year they would be attending a fair in Dubai about card payment systems to represent Turkey and they would be the "guest of honour" at the organization.
Furthermore, Soner Canko highlighted that in 2002, 9 percent of the total consumption expenditures were completed by using cards, and added in 2012, it rose to 36 percent.
Canko stressed that Turkey upgraded much better than many of the European countries about it and said, Turkey wishes to catch the level of Scandinavian countries, as the card usage rate was higher in those countries.
He said, that's why they set up the aim of; by 2015, 50 percent of the total consumption expenditures and by 2023 all of the total consumption expenditures will be made by cards.
