ISTANBUL
The Turkish Football Federation has issued a penalty against Fenerbahce Chairman Aziz Yildirim for threatening a referee at a critical league game last week.
Yildirim was handed a 100-day deprivation of rights as chairman and a fine of 46,500 Turkish liras ($17,870).
Tuesday’s ruling by the federation's discipline council came after Yildirim allegedly threatened the referee of last week’s match between Fenerbahce and Suat Altin Insaat Kayseri Erciyesspor, the federation said in a statement Tuesday.
Title contenders Fenerbahce suffered a critical tie against Kayseri Erciyesspor on matchday 31, straining its chances for a league-high 20th championship in Turkish first division.
The council also fined Besiktas and Akhisar Belediyespor over their fans' offensive chants during a match last week.
Besiktas were fined 50,000 Turkish liras ($19,230) and will have to play the next away game in an empty stadium. Akhisar Belediyespor were fined 100,000 Turkish liras ($38,450).
