A forest fire near the disused Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine has been contained, emergency services said on Wednesday.

"The fire has been contained… The situation is under control," the service said in a statement, according to Russia’s state-run TASS news agency.

Chernoybl was the site of the 1986 nuclear meltdown that sent a cloud of radiation across Europe in the world’s worst nuclear accident.

The fire – Ukraine’s worst in 23 years – broke out on Tuesday in Chernobyl forest, fanned by strong winds.

TASS cited Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov sa saying that authorities suspected the fire had been started deliberately.

Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said late Tuesday that radiation levels had not increased in the area.

No casualties have been reported.
