Commissioner Hahn eyes Serbian entry to EU bloc

SARAJEVO, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Johannes Hahn, European Commissioner for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, has said during a visit to Belgrade that the European Union family wants Serbia to be member of the bloc in every sense.

As part of a tour of southeast Europe, Hahn met Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic on Thursday.

Hahn said in a joint press conference in Belgrade with Vucic: "I will personally work very hard and I will visit Belgrade very often in order to ensure that Serbia joins EU as soon as possible.

"The EU is one of the major trade partners to Serbia. We want to fix the economic situation and prepare Serbia in order for it to become a full member of European Union family. Serbia must become more attractive for future investments."

'Positive changes'

Hahn said Serbia had come a long way towards EU membership by making judicial and legal reforms and engaging in the fight against corruption.

Hahn also stressed that EU membership would bring many positive changes and welfare to the citizens of Serbia.

Serbian Prime Minister Vucic noted that Serbia was a stable country and its stability would not be destroyed.

Vucic said: "On the subject of Russia and Ukraine, I would like to say that Serbia does not have three different policies.

"We are working for the interests of the citizens of Serbia ... Our strategic goal is to become an EU member."
