MH17 flight evidence removal begins in eastern Ukraine

KIEV, Ukraine

Workers from the Donetsk region of East Ukraine began removing crucial debris from the crash site of MH17 on Sunday.

The local workers were supervised by Dutch experts and by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.

The new evidence and unknown bodies will be taken to the Netherlands for forensic examination. The aircraft pieces were marked with special paint by Dutch officials and were transported to a train stop located near the crash site.

Access to the evidence was finally made possible after months of delays by pro-Russian separatist authorities.

The plane was shot down on July 17 close to Ukraine's border with Russia, en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. All 298 people on board were killed. The flight carried 283 passengers, and 15 crew members, including 193 Dutch citizens.

The pro-Russian rebels deny responsibility for the attack.

An official from self proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic said that the gathering up and removal of debris would take ten days.
