Switzerland will tighten economic sanctions against Russia, following the lead of the EU's sanctions imposed in September for the Ukraine crisis.

"In view of the situation in Ukraine, and following decisions taken by the EU, the Swiss Federal Council has decided to adopt further measures to prevent the circumvention of international sanctions," said the Swiss Federal Council in a written statement on Thursday.

Switzerland's tightened up measures will affect five Russian banks and six companies, as well as 24 other Russian companies.

"Twenty-four names have been added to the existing list of persons and companies with whom financial intermediaries are prohibited from entering into new business relationships, and whose existing business dealings are subject to a duty to notify," the statement said.
