KIEV, Ukraine

Nearly a thousand Ukrainian soldiers were reported dead or missing in the battle with pro-Russian separatists at Ilovaisk, Ukraine government sources said on Monday.

Andriy Senchenko, the head of the interim investigation Commission of the Ukrainian Parliament into events at Ilovaisk in August laid the blame for the heavy losses on former Defense Minister Valeriy Geletey and the General Staff.

He alleged that the former minister knew that the soldiers lives were in danger from an attack, but took no action. The committee of inquiry is continuing its investigations into the lost battle.

The town of Ilovaisk, located to the south-east of the city of Donetsk was besieged by pro-Russian rebels in August and these huge losses were suffered by the Ukrainian army.

Separately, the 6-week cease fire between Ukraine and the pro-Russian separatists has been terminated by the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, rebel leaders said on Monday.

The leader of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic Alexander Zakharchenko announced in a tweet account that his group considered the cease fire at an end.
