Gazan killed in Israeli attack; death toll hits 2,140

GAZA CITY

A Palestinian was killed in a fresh Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, taking the death toll from Israel's weeks-long onslaught on the beleaguered coastal territory to 2,140- according to a Health Ministry spokesman.

"The man was killed in a strike that targeted the northern town of Beit Hanoun," spokesman Ashraf al-Qodra told Anadolu Agency.

The latest fatality brings to 2140 the number of Palestinians killed in relentless Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip since hostilities first broke out on July 7.

Nearly 11,100 Palestinians, meanwhile, have been injured, many critically.

Al-Qodra said that Palestinian fatalities had included 578 children, 261 women and 102 elderly people.

Over the same period, at least 68 Israelis – 64 soldiers and four civilians – have been killed, according to Israeli figures.

The number of Palestinian fatalities from Israel's current offensive has now surpassed the combined death toll from two previous operations against Gaza, including Israel's bloody "Operation Cast Lead" in 2008/09 in which at least 1500 Palestinians were killed over the course of three weeks.
