More than 1,000 Turks participate in ISIL: Turkish MP

ANKARA

An MP from Turkey's Nationalist Movement Party has said that more than 1,000 Turkish citizens have participated in the Islamic State – (ISIL) – rebel group in Iraq according to intelligence held by Turkish security forces.

A German newspaper "Die Welt" has also claimed that many Turks have joined ISIL – making up nearly 10 percent of the militant group.

Holding a press conference at the Turkish parliament, MP Ozcan Yeniceri said that around 1,200 ISIL-led militants had entered Syria via Turkey over the Ramadan period, according to European intelligence units.

"People are coming to Turkish parliament saying that their brothers and children have participated in ISIL," said Yeniceri. "They are requesting for help to return them to Turkey," he added.
