16 killed, 42 injured in Iraq violence
Recent months have witnessed an uptick in violence across Iraq

BAGHDAD
At least 16 Iraqis were killed and 42 others injured in a series of attacks across Iraq on Monday, security sources said.
Two police personnel were gunned down by militants in Baqubah in the northern province of Diyala, a police source told Anadolu Agency.
An army soldier was killed in a militant attack on a checkpoint in western Mosul in western Iraq.
Three policemen were killed and a pro-government tribesman was injured in a drive-by shooting in Samarra, west of Tikrit in northern Iraq, a police source said.
Meanwhile, eight civilians were killed and 39 others injured in army shelling of residential areas in the western city of Fallujah.
Two militants were also killed and four others injured in clashes between army forces and militants from the Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and Levant in the western Anbar province.
Recent months have witnessed an uptick in violence across Iraq.
Although most such attacks go unclaimed, Iraqi authorities usually point the finger at Al-Qaeda-linked militants.
