Israeli Finance Minister calls Jerusalem, Ottawa attacks 'global terror'

JERUSALEM

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Thursday linked a shooting attack in Canada and a car crash that killed a three-month-old Israeli baby in Jerusalem one day earlier to what he described as "global terrorism."

"The terror attacks that took place yesterday, at almost the same time in both ends of the world, show that terrorism is a global epidemic that must be fought against with force and without compromises," Lieberman wrote on his Facebook page.

On Wednesday, a Palestinian driver ran over a number of Israeli passengers disembarking from a train in Jerusalem, killing a three-month-old baby and injuring eight other people.

On the same day in Canada, a soldier at an Ottawa war memorial was killed by a gunman who later made his way into the parliament building before being gunned down.

Liberman asserted that Israel stands by Canada which, he said, has demonstrated that it does not give in to terrorism by joining the war against the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) militant group, which recently overran vast swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria.

An international coalition formed by the U.S. has been striking ISIL targets from the air for the last several weeks.

The strikes, however, although said to be effective, have so far failed to eradicate the militant movement, whose fighters hail from all over the globe.
