BAGHDAD

Ten people were killed and 20 others, including an officer, were injured in a Monday bomb attack at the entrance of Iraq's eastern Wasit province, a provincial security source has said.

"A suicide bomber slammed his car into an army checkpoint at the province's northern entrance," the source said, adding that the preliminary death toll may still be revised upward.

Wasit is a relatively stable province of Iraq, in which such attack is unusual.

Observers said Monday's attack was related to ongoing fighting in the western Anbar province between the army and the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant militant group.

Iraqis will head to the polls next week to cast ballots in nationwide parliamentary polls.
