Turkish security forces have killed more than 35 PKK terrorists in air attacks in northern Iraq after 16 soldiers were martyred Sunday evening in the southeastern Hakkari province, security sources said on Tuesday.

The sources said during an intensive air attack, 20 PKK targets in northern Iraq were bombed late Monday by 35 F-16 and 18 F-4 aircraft.

According to initial findings, between 35 and 40 PKK terrorists were killed, the sources added.

The Turkish military said the patrol was clearing Daglica to Yuksekova road in the southeastern province of Hakkari on Sunday evening. The soldiers were attacked as  improvised explosive devices blew up as their two armored vehicles passed. Six soldiers were also wounded in the attack.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said: "These mountains will be cleaned of terrorists. No matter what happens they will be cleaned."

The deadliest attack since the PKK renewed its armed campaign at the end of July, was protested all over Turkey.
