BEIJING, China

Almost a million people have been evacuated from China’s eastern coast after the country’s National Meteorological Center issued a red alert for a super-typhoon named "Chan-Hom.”

State news agency Xinhua reported Saturday that the meteorological center issued the highest level of alert for the typhoon after it was spotted some 430 kilometers southeast of Zhejiang Province on Friday afternoon.

Over 865,000 have been evacuated since the alarm was raised, while land, air and sea transport to the east coast has been suspended.

Xinhua quoted the National Meteorological Center as saying that the typhoon could be the strongest to hit Zhejiang since 1949.

China has a four color-coded weather alert system, with red representing the highest level of alert, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
