Turkey harshly condems Morsi death sentence
Turkey's Foreign Ministry says the decision is "arbitrary, far-from international standards and unlawful"
ANKARA
Turkey has harshly condemned President Mohamed Morsi's death sentence over jailbreak charges by an Egyptian court on Tuesday.
Releasing a statement, Turkey's Foreign Ministry said President Morsi was exposed to a decision that is "arbitrary, far-from international standards and unlawful".
"The decision will not contribute to much needed social peace and stability environment at all," the statement said.
The ministry also called for a revoke of the decision "as soon as possible."
The court also sentenced five leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood group, including top leader Mohamed Badie, to death on charges of taking part in a mass jailbreak in 2011.
The court also sent more than 90 defendants – in absentia – including prominent Muslim scholar Yusuf al-Qaradawi to the gallows over similar charges.
Egyptian authorities accuse Morsi and 130 others of taking part in the mass jailbreak during Egypt's January 2011 uprising that ousted autocratic President Hosni Mubarak.
