Sudan prevents opposition leaders from traveling to France

KHARTOUM, Sudan

Sudanese authorities banned opposition leaders from traveling to France on Monday.

The politicians were stopped at Khartoum Airport while on their way to participate in a European Parliament hearing on Sudan, Mariam Alsadig Almahdi, Deputy Chairman of the National Umma Party, told Anadolu Agency.

Almahdi was one of those barred from traveling. She said seven other opposition leaders were prevented by security services at the airport from traveling. 

“We were barred from travelling and our passports were taken from us,” Almahdi said. “We complained to the security office at the airport, but they did not tell us the reasons for this violation.’’

Sudanese authorities have not elaborated on why the politicians were banned, but it was not the first time that opposition leaders have been prevented from leaving the country.  

At least three other acitivists were prevented from traveling within the past week.
