The bodies of 29 people, believed to be killed by Syrian regime forces, were removed Monday from water wells in Syria’s northern province of Idlib, said a spokesman for the Idlib Civil Defense.

“The regime forces threw bodies into the water wells, when leaving the town of Ariha,” Majd Khalaf, spokesman for the Idlib Civil Defense, told the Anadolu Agency.

Some of the bodies have been in the wells for about a month and were reached Monday morning, Khalaf said.

“We are continuing search efforts, as there may be more bodies in other wells in the region,” he said, adding that the opposition forces lacked the necessary equipment to search wells filled with water.

Syrian opposition forces took control of Ariha, west of the city of Idlib city on May 28 from regime forces.

17 Daesh militants killed in north

At least 17 Daesh militants were killed near a Syrian opposition-controlled town of Soran in the northern Aleppo province, opposition group Damascus Front spokesman Ahmad Mohammad told the Anadolu Agency.

“Seventeen Daesh militants, including one of their commanders, were killed and one of their tanks was destroyed in a village near Soran,” said

According to Mohammad, clashes in nearby villages between Syrian opposition forces and Daesh militants were ongoing.

“Opposition groups sent their reinforcing units from the Aleppo and Idlib regions have been moved to the north, to Aleppo, to fight against Daesh,” he said.
