BURSA, Turkey
Health Minister Mehmet Muezzinoglu said Wednesday that the mayor of Gursu district in the western province of Bursa remained in critical condition.
Earlier the day, Cuneyt Yildiz, the mayor of Gursu district, was shot by a gunman for an unknown reason.
"A bullet entered his left eye and hit the left side of his head. There is damage in his brain but his other vital signs are sound," Muezzinoglu told reporters after he visited the mayor in the Sevket Yilmaz training and research hospital in Bursa.
He said a municipal officer attacked the mayor, who was in his office with his driver.
The mayor's driver was also injured in the attack and he is currently in surgery according to Muezzinoglu.
"The attacker's identity was revealed. As far as I know he fled the scene, security are looking for him," he added.
Muezzinoglu said that he also informed the Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu about the incident.
