TOKYO

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake has struck a northeast region of Japan devastated by the 2011 tsunami and tremor, but no tsunami warning was given.

Japan's weather agency said that the 6:13 a.m. Wednesday (22:13GMT Tuesday) tremor had led to no immediate reports of damage or injury.

Kyodo news agency reported that bullet train services were temporarily disrupted on the Tohoku and Joetsu shinkansen lines due to power outages.

Japan's Meteorological Agency has said that the quake registered upper 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in Hanamaki in the southern part of Iwate Prefecture, and lower 5 in other parts of Iwate and Miyagi prefectures.

The 2011 quake and tsunami killed more than 18,000 people and triggered a nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima power plant.
