Ukraine: Fire threatens Chernobyl nuclear plant

KIEV, Ukraine 

A forest fire in Ukraine is threatening the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, Ukraine's Interior Minister Arsen Avakov has said.

Strong winds were fanning the fire in Chernobyl forest which could spread across another forest only 20 kilometers away from the plant where a catastrophic nuclear accident occurred in 1986, the minister said late on Tuesday.

Ukraine's Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk has assigned tasks to emergency services, Avakov said. 

About 35 fire trucks are in the region, the Ministry of Emergency Situations has said in a statement.
