The United Nations Security Council is set to hold an emergency meeting on Yemen on Sunday amid a deteriorating security situation in the country.
The session was requested by Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, who escaped to the southern port city of Aden in February after the capital Sanaa was occupied by the Shiite Houthi group, diplomats said.
In a letter to the Security Council, Hadi urged the Council to take action against the alleged coup against his government by Iran-allied Houthis.
The meeting, which is scheduled at 3 p.m. (1900GMT), comes a day after the U.S. evacuated its remaining personnel from Yemen, citing a worsening security situation.
Yemen has been in turmoil since a popular uprising in 2011 forced longstanding president Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down a year later.
In recent months, the impoverished Arab state has appeared on the brink of civil war, with the powerful Shiite Houthi movement seeking to expand its influence beyond Sanaa.
