LONDON

The U.K.'s Labour Party has a three-to-four-point lead over its rival Conservatives as the country's general elections draw near, according to the latest opinion polls.

A total of 35 percent of participants said they would vote for Labour in the May 7 elections with 31 percent voicing support for the ruling Conservatives, according to a YouGov/The Sun poll published Friday.

The figures from the poll suggest the U.K. Independence Party has the support of 15 percent of voters, while the Green Party and current joint-coalition party with the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, were down to eight and six percent, respectively.

 The sentiment was reflected in another opinion poll conducted by Populus on Friday, which put support for Labour leader Ed Miliband's party at 33 percent, followed by Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservatives at 31 percent.

About 40 million people are expected to go to the polls on May 7 to elect the 56th Parliament of the United Kingdom.

A total of 326 out of 650 seats are needed for a majority in the House of Commons, the lower house of the U.K.'s Parliament.
