KABUL, Afghanistan

Five Afghan aid workers working for an independent organization for children were kidnapped in the southern Afghan province of Uruzgan, according to local sources on Tuesday.

Save the Children workers were kidnapped late Monday by unknown people as they were visiting the province for a project, the sources said.

"We have not heard from them since last (Monday) night," said Zubaida Akbar, the organization's campaign and communications manager in Kabul.

An operation has been launched by Afghan security forces to find the kidnapped workers.

Save the Children carries out educational and health projects in various regions of Afghanistan.
