KARACHI

Pakistani security forces detained around 150 suspects across the country on Saturday night as part of their ongoing crackdown on Taliban militants, officials said on Sunday.

The crackdown follows the brutal mass shooting at an army-run school in the city of Peshawar. Over 140 people, mostly children, were killed in the school massacre -- making it one of the worst mass murders in the country's recent history.

The arrests were made in Karachi, the country's commercial capital, Lahore, Swabi, Lakki Marwat, Peshawar and other districts.

According to officials, the detainees had alleged links with different banned militant groups.

Shaken by the Peshawar school massacre, the Pakistani government has approved an aggressive counter-terrorism agenda that includes the establishment of military courts to try militants. A six-year long de facto ban on the death penalty was also lifted.
