At least 15 ISIL militants killed in Iraq

AL-ANBAR, Iraq

At least 15 militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant were killed Friday in the western Iraqi province of Al Anbar, district authorities said.

In clashes between the militants and the Iraqi security forces, 15 others were wounded, Mahmood Shakir, regional parliament speaker of the Al Amiriyah district in Fallujah told Anadolu Agency.

The army destroyed an ISIL armored vehicle and a tank.

Shakir said the Iraqi security forces had succeeded in repulsing an ISIL attack, and that they inflicted huge losses on their enemy with the help of peshmerga forces.

The Iraqi army and Kurdish peshmerga forces are fighting the ISIL militants in Iraq since mid June, when the extremist group took control of Mosul, the second largest city in the country.

The U.S. is leading an international coalition, including France, Germany, and Saudi Arabia, that carries out airstrikes on ISIL targets in Iraq and Syria where militants control large swathes of territory.

According to the UN, an estimated 1.8 million citizens have been driven from their homes this year in Iraq because of the conflict.
