Armenian Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan is to pay an official visit to Iran to boost cooperation between the two countries on exploiting oil and natural gas.

Abrahamyan will travel to Tehran on Monday and be received by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

During the visit, two parties will sign bilateral agreements to enhance relations in energy, mainly on oil and natural gas.

Armenian Energy Minister Armen Movsisyan visited Tehran on Saturday for talks with his counterpart Hamid Chitchian about Armenia's gas and electricity purchases from Iran.

Movsisyan announced earlier in the summer that Yerevan was ready to buy two billion cubic meters of gas from Iran annually.

Armenia has no proven reserves of energy resources and is dependent on imports for all of its natural gas and crude oil consumption.

The country started to import natural gas from Iran in 2009 and diversified its energy security away from being dependent on Russia.
