Paris: 29 states pledge military aid for Iraq

PARIS

Turkey's new Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has stressed the importance of Syria in fighting the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant, as leaders and officials from 29 countries meeting in Paris agreed to provide Baghdad with military aid.

Tweeting from his official account on Monday, Cavusoglu said the security problems in the region could only be solved by eliminating the causes.

He wrote: "We appreciate that a new government has been formed in Iraq and attach importance to new Ministers of the Interior and Defense being appointed without further delay."

"The stability and security of Iraq cannot be considered irrespective of Syria. As long as the regime in Syria is in power, it is impossible to establish stability either in Iraq or in the region."

The minister also said the stability of the country and the region depended on the Iraqi government adopting an inclusive approach towards the whole of the Iraqi people.

Representatives from the countries - which included the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council; France, Russia, China the United Kingdom, and the United States - met in the French capital on Monday to agree ways of combating ISIL.

The participants were "committed to supporting the new Iraqi government in its fight against ISIL by any means necessary, including appropriate military assistance" the French Foreign Ministry said in a statement, adding that tackling ISIL was "a matter of urgency".
