JERUSALEM

An Israeli man was seriously injured in the head on Thursday after he was hit by a car as he ran toward a shelter in the southern city of Beersheba, Israeli police said.

Police added in a statement that the man was running toward the shelter after he heard rocket warning sirens, according Israel's Channel 2.

It said Israel's Iron Dome defense system succeeded in intercepting two of five rockets that were fired on the southern Israeli city on Thursday.

At least 2084 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed in Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip since July 7.

Israel resumed its attacks on Gaza on Tuesday, following a five-day hiatus, a time during which Palestinian and Israeli negotiators sought to reach a permanent ceasefire under Egyptian mediation.

The indirect talks, which had taken place in the Egyptian capital Cairo, fell apart on Tuesday.

A total of 67 Israelis, including 64 troops and three civilians, were also killed in the same period of time.
