Netanyahu advised not to cooperate with UN rights team

 JERUSALEM

Israel's Foreign Ministry had recommended the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to cooperate with a committee recently formed by the United Nations Human Rights Council to investigate Israel's latest war on the Gaza Strip, Israeli radio reported.

The broadcaster quoted unnamed sources from the Israeli Foreign Ministry sources as saying that the ministry had opted for non-cooperation with the committee because the majority of the U.N. body's members are opposed to Israel.

The Foreign Ministry did not, however, issue an official statement on the alleged recommendation.

The United Nations Human Rights Council had last month decided to form an independent international committee to investigate the violations committed as part of the Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip.

The council also asked investigators to prepare a list of "crimes" committed during the offensive and also determine responsibility for these crimes to open the door for bringing people involved to account.

Israel's offensive on Gaza, which lasted for almost whole month, had left 1867 people dead and more than 9470 others injured.

Israeli aerial strikes and artillery shelling had also left thousands of homes and buildings in the Gaza Strip in tatters.
