Gul expresses sorrow over death of Colombia's 'Gabo'

ANKARA

Turkish President Abdullah Gul has expressed his condolences over the death of Nobel Prize-winning Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez to Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos.

Gul said he was sad at the death that one of the greatest writers of contemporary literature who represented Colombian society, according to a statement released by the Turkish presidential palace on Saturday.

Gul conveyed his sympathy to the writer's family, adding that Turkish readers had loved Marquez and embraced his work.

Widely recognized as one of the forefathers of magic realism, Marquez - affectionately known as Gabo - was Colombia’s most internationally recognized writer.

He passed away in Mexico City on Thursday at the age of 87.
