At least 15,600 patients in Gaza, including 3,800 children, are waiting for medical evacuation to receive lifesaving care outside the besieged enclave, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Wednesday.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said through the US social media company X that the agency is supporting the evacuation of patients, stressing the urgent need for access to treatment.

"At least 15,600 patients, including 3,800 children, are waiting for medical evacuation, supported by @WHO, to receive lifesaving care outside #Gaza," he said.

Tedros also welcomed a joint statement issued by 24 foreign ministers, two development ministers, and EU Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib, offering support for the treatment of critical patients from Gaza.

UN investigators recently concluded that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, where over 65,000 people have been killed since October 2023.
