A Turkish construction company in Donetsk is hosting some Ukrainians seeking safety during intense clashes between army troops and pro-Russian separatists.

The ground floor of the Turkish company’s 10-story building has been turned into a shelter for Donetsk residents who want to protect themselves from the fighting in the territory of Donetsk.

About 40 residents took shelter there with their few belongings and cash when the conflict resumed in the area. The fighting is expected to be prolonged.

The company has suspended its activities due to the violence but it has been assisting the civilians, a company official said.

Alexander, a 71-year-old who wants to escape the conflict, comes to the shelter every day. He hopes the tension will end as soon as possible.

“Sister and brother throw the guns at each other. Donetsk has become empty," he said. "There are conflicts everywhere. I'm afraid to stay in my own home and come to the shelter as I hear the bomb blasts.”

At least 500 people have been killed since pro-Russian separatists in the eastern part of Ukraine declared their intention to break away from Kiev in March.
