ANBAR, Iraq
At least 66 Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant militants and four other people, including two soldiers, were killed in acts of violence across Iraq on Saturday, security sources said.
An Al-Jazira and Al-Badia Operations commander linked to the Iraqi army, Brigadier General Ziya Kazim, told the Anadolu Agency that Iraqi army forces had killed 40 ISIL militants in the town of Anah in Anbar - Iraq's largest governorate.
The commanders said that the army had destroyed 20 cars in the operation, which was supported by airstrikes.
Separately, tribal sources said that ISIL militants had executed two civilians in Fallujah and thrown their bodies in the street.
The police chief of Salah ad-Din governorate, Hamad en-Namis, said that 26 ISIL militants were also killed in strikes targeting a house they had used as a base in the town of Ed-Duluiyy.
Abdulvahhab es-Saidi, the commander responsible for the operations in Salah ad-Din, said that suicide bombers attacked a military base in Tikrit with four car bombs, killing two soldiers and injuring two others.
The Iraqi army is engaged in severe fighting with ISIL militants after the extremist group took control of Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city, in addition to other large swathes of the country in mid-June.
The U.S. is leading an international coalition against ISIL, using air strikes to target their positions in Iraq and Syria.
