Number of tourists visiting Cappadocia, one of the most popular tourism destinations in Turkey, has reached 2,386,000 people in the ten months of 2013.

Cappadocia, the place famous for its chimney rocks, hot air balloon trips, underground cities and boutique hotels carved into rocks, was visited by 2,386,000 Turkish and foreign tourists in the ten months of 2013, compared to 2,327,744 tourists in the previous year, according to the data compiled by AA.

The number of the tourists in the region is expected to exceed three million till the end of the year.

The most popular places visited by tourists are Goreme open-air museum and Kaymakli and Derinkuyu Underground Cities in the famous Cappadocia region.

“Cappadocia has become more popular day by day and the number of tourists increase each year.” said Nazif Demir, Secretary General of Cappadocia Tourism Managers Foundation (KAPTİD).

He underlined that Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice) and Eid al-Fitr (Ramadan) effected tourism in the region in a positive way.

“Tourism managers expect direct flights to the region and increase of existing flights,” Demir stated as their biggest expectation in order to attract more tourists.

Hot-air ballooning and trekking are very popular in Cappadocia. Sedimentary rocks formed in lakes and streams and ignimbrite deposits that erupted from ancient volcanoes approximately nine to three million years ago, underlie the Cappadocia region. The rocks of Cappadocia near Goreme eroded into hundreds of pillars and minaret-like forms. People of the villages at the heart of the Cappadocia region carved out houses, churches and monasteries from the soft rocks of volcanic deposits. Goreme became a monastic center in 300-1200 AD.
