Speking at the joint press conferense with Poland's Minister of Foreign Affairs Radoslaw Sikorski, Kerry made a statement on the incidents at Taksim Gezi Park.
Kerry said they were following the events in Turkey very closely, adding he was working with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on efforts with respect to the Middle East.
"The United States supports full freedom of expression and assembly, including the right of people to peaceful protest, because that is fundamental to any democracy," said Kerry, adding they were concerned by the reports of excessive use of force by police.
"We obviously hope that there will be a full investigation of those incidents," said Kerry "and a full restraint from the police force with respect to those kinds of incidents."
Kerry called on all the people involved, those demonstrating and expressing their freedom of expression, and the government, to avoid any provocations of violence.
Referring to the number of injured people, Kerry said, "Obviously, everybody was deeply concerned about the numbers of people who have been injured and about the level of violence to property."
Stating US updated the travel advisories for US citizens in Turkey, Kerry said they warned US citizens against participating in those kinds of events.
"We don't say these things to interfere in another country's choices or events, but we say these things to reaffirm what we believe are universal principles and values that are essential to the practice of democracy and to the improvement of the relationship between governments and people," said Kerry in his speech.
Jagland told reporters that they noted down the fact that the Turkish government had acknowledged that excessive force might have been used against the protestors in recent demonstrations.
Any such allegations should be properly investigated and everything should be done to prevent excessive use of force in the future,” Jagland said.
I encourage the authorities to look at the underlying causes of the protests and to do their utmost to address them in a peaceful and democratic manner,” he added.
