Palestinian factions in Cairo for truce talks

CAIRO

Representative of Palestinian resistance factions have arrived in Cairo for talks aimed at striking a truce in the Gaza Strip, a Hamas source said Tuesday.

Senior Hamas leader Moussa Abu Marzqoue leads his movement's delegation, the source told Anadolu Agency.

According to the source, the delegation of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah group is led by senior group member Azzam al-Ahmad.

Egyptian officials could not be reached for comment.

The Gaza Strip has been ravaged by relentless Israeli attacks since July 7, leaving 1119 Palestinians dead and more than 6500 others injured.

Israel claims that the offensive, now in its fourth week, aims at halting rocket fire from the blockaded Palestinian territory.

At least 56 Israelis – 53 soldiers and three civilians – have been killed since the hostilities began.

An Egyptian ceasefire proposal has been rejected by Palestinian groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad, citing that the plan fails to meet "conditions" of the Palestinian resistance.
