Galatasaray defeat Fenerbahce in Istanbul derby

 ISTANBUL 

Galatasaray have triumphed 1-0 against archrivals Fenerbahce in a tense Istanbul derby that saw both sides lose players to red cards.

The Lions scored early at home at Turk-Telekom Arena when the club’s world-renowned midfielder Wesley Sneijder sent a powerful ground shot close to the post at 9’.

Despite the victory, Galatasaray remain seven points behind the Yellow Canaries, who are leading the Spor Toto Super League with six games to go in the season.

During the tense face-off, the referee showed two red cards, one to Fenerbahce's midfielder Emre Belozoglu five minutes before the first half whistle.

The other player to be booked was Galatasaray's Brazilian Felipe Melo at 86’.

Twelve other players were shown the yellow card, eight of them from visitors Fenerbahce.
