Yildiz: We want Turkmen gas to reach Europe through Turkey

ASHGABAT, Turkey

Turkey fully supports plans to transport Turkmen natural gas to Europe via Turkey, both technically and politically, Turkey's energy minister said Friday.

"Turkey has been supporting the idea of transporting Turkmen gas to the European market since the 1990s and will keep doing so," Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yildiz said in Turkmenistan’s capital Ashgabat.

The minister is attending a four-way meeting with Turkmenistan's Deputy President in Charge of Energy Baymurat Hocamuhammedov, Minister of Industry and Energy of Azerbaijan Natiq Aliyev and Energy Union VP Maros Sefcovic.

Turkmenistan is the sixth-largest natural gas reserve holder in the world, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

The country, however, suffers from insufficient pipelines to deliver their natural gas to world markets.

Underlining that all the countries that wish to be involved in delivering Turkmen gas to Europe have different and crucial responsibilities, Yildiz said that Friday’s four-way meeting, which is a first, is an important step toward realizing this idea.
