Birol Güven participated in the fourteenth session of the Cinema Workshop, themed “The Turkish Film and TV Industry,” organized under the coordination of AA Academy and moderated by Barışkan Ünal, Foreign and Economy News Publishing Manager at Anadolu Ajansı (AA).
Güven shared broad insights, ranging from new regulations in the film industry to the international market for Turkish TV series, from changing audience habits to his own experiences as a screenwriter.
Regarding his appointment as the General Director of Cinema, Güven said:
"I had other plans in life. It just happened to be the right moment. So, for me, it has been an incredibly big change and a major experience. I thought I understood the government side, but once I sat in this seat, it felt like everything was starting over again."
Describing his early days as a “period of ignorance,” Güven said:
“Truly not knowing—ignorance—is a blessing from God. Because ignorance comes as a package deal with courage. People do things when they are ignorant. The more you learn, the more you feel you can’t do it.”
Güven gave the example of how the TV series Çocuklar Duymasın came to life, explaining that a television channel once asked him to write a show in 21 days.
“There was no script, not even a title for the series. I said ‘sure, we’ll do it,’ because I didn’t know we couldn’t. If someone asked me the same today, I’d ask for a year. Back then, I said yes without knowing anything—and we did it. That’s how Çocuklar Duymasın was born,” he said.
The talk was attended by Oğuz Enis Peru, AA Vice President & Chief Operating Officer, as well as Yahya Bostan, AA Academy and Editorial Coordinator. Also present were Prof. Dr. Ayşe Elif Emre Kaya, Dean of the Faculty of Communication at Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University, along with academics, students, and cinema enthusiasts.
