The event, held at AAtölye under the coordination of AA Academy and moderated by AA Environment News Manager Hale Aydoğmuş, was attended by Dr. Tuğba Evrim Maden, Policy Development Coordinator of Turkish Water Institute, AA employees and guests.
At the event, issues such as climate change, the state of water resources in the world, and the future of water in Türkiye and the nearby geography were discussed.
Dr. Maden stated that fresh water resources are limited and that only 1 percent of the world's water is fresh water.
Emphasizing that water consumption is increasing with the rapid increase in the world population, Dr. Maden said, "Water resources are running out and we are using water intensively. Water resources in the world are not evenly distributed. We cannot say that there is so much water per unit in every geography. For this reason, some regions are experiencing very serious shortages."
Stating that the most rainy period with overflows and floods was in 2019, Maden said, "We are experiencing dry periods step by step. The period of droughts has completely changed, it has become longer."
Noting that floods occur due to the rain that should fall in a month falling in two days, Maden said, "Controlling and retaining overflows are also important steps in the fight against climate change. Somehow, we need to retain water during the period of heavy rainfall."
Dr. Tuğba Evrim Maden stated that countries should take serious measures regarding the management of water and water resources and said that Türkiye has an awareness about water.
Stating that practices such as brushing teeth or running the dishwasher, which are consumption habits used in daily life, lead to water waste, Maden emphasized that 140 liters of water is wasted when a cup of coffee is thrown away.
Stating that there are different types of water shortages, Dr. Maden said:
"We are one of the countries facing physical water shortages. The amount of water per person is not enough. If you have a physical problem in the supply-demand balance, this means that there is a physical water shortage in your country. Economic water shortage, on the other hand, occurs when you have a water source, but your institutions to deliver that water to you are weak or your economic means are insufficient. When we talk about these issues, we usually focus on physical water shortages, but economic water shortages are also an important problem."
