The digital carbon footprint refers to the amount of carbon emissions generated by an individual’s activities in the digital world, based on the energy consumed for each digital action.

Although digitalization has contributed to progress toward a more sustainable world, every single online action, such as making a search on a search engine, sending an email, watching a video, or joining an online meeting, results in a certain amount of carbon emission.

Experts point out that while the energy required for daily activities has decreased thanks to digitalization, and therefore the carbon emissions caused by these activities have been significantly reduced, small behavioral changes in our digital habits can still make a considerable difference in reducing our digital carbon footprint. They suggest several measures, such as avoiding sending unnecessary emails, joining online meetings without video when possible, and not watching videos in high quality.

The carbon emissions of a few common daily digital activities can be listed as follows:

- Each search made through a search engine produces about 1.45 grams of carbon emissions.

- Sending a standard email causes approximately 4 grams of carbon emissions.

- A one-hour video conference results in an average of 157 grams of carbon emissions.

- Watching high-quality video content online generates about 441 grams of carbon emissions per hour.
