Rep. Ro Khanna said Saturday that new US strikes on Iran violate the War Powers Resolution, warning that President Donald Trump could face court action if he does not halt the war.
“These strikes are a blatant violation of the War Powers Resolution that we passed,” Khanna, the representative from the state of California, wrote on US social media company X.
“Trump must stop this war now — or we will take him to court to compel him to do so,” he added.
The US Senate passed a War Powers Resolution on Tuesday, directing Trump to end hostilities against Iran unless Congress authorizes further military action.
The measure passed 50-48, with four Republicans joining Democrats in support.
Khanna made the remarks while reposting a report on the latest US strikes against Iranian targets.
The US’ military Central Command (CENTCOM) said Saturday that US forces conducted additional strikes against multiple targets in Iran on June 27 “at the Commander in Chief’s direction.”
CENTCOM said the strikes came after Iranian forces launched a one-way attack drone that hit the Panama-flagged tanker M/T Kiku at 0830GMT while it was transiting near the Strait of Hormuz with more than 2 million barrels of crude oil.
It said US military aircraft targeted Iranian military surveillance infrastructure, communication systems, air defense sites, drone storage facilities and minelayer capabilities.
