Natural gas and renewables used jointly can be a winning combination, according to Group President and CEO of Norwegian energy consulting company DNV GL, Remi Eriksen, on Wednesday.
Eriksen, who spoke at the ONS 2016 Energy Conference in Norway’s Stavanger city, said that although gas and renewables can be competitors, the development in cooperation for these two resources is needed.
'I think the future will not be just with fossil fuels, but also renewables will play a big part,' he said.
“There are ways of deepening the friendship of renewables and natural gas. A project to allow electric power to be produced from offshore wind combined with the injection of hydrogen from hydropower plants injected into the existing gas infrastructure is an example of this potential collaboration,” he said.
He vowed that there is no alternative to LNG for the ease of transportation of gas.
'The effectiveness of gas transportation is better than electricity and that's why households prefer gas,' he added.
Eriksen also lamented the very low contribution of gas in the fuel mix in transportation at 5 percent.
