Carbon Emissions

Carbon dioxide is one of the main greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere as a result of human activities.

When plants are unable to absorb excessive amounts of carbon dioxide, the gas accumulates in the atmosphere, trapping more heat and radiation from the sun and causing the Earth’s surface to warm.

Carbon is naturally circulated between the atmosphere, oceans, soil, plants and animals as part of the carbon cycle. However, human activities have led to a substantial increase in the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere, significantly disrupting this cycle. Forests, marine vegetation, algae, and soil have the capacity to remove and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. However, deforestation, ocean pollution and the degradation of natural balances caused by human interference have reduced the effectiveness of these natural carbon sinks.

It is important to note that carbon emissions also have natural sources, including gas releases from the oceans, the decomposition of vegetation and other biomass, volcanic activity, and forest fires caused by natural events. The carbon released through these processes remains part of the carbon cycle thanks to the role of plants and natural sinks.

However, since the Industrial Revolution, human activities have been the main cause of increased emissions in the atmosphere. Human-induced carbon emissions far exceed the absorption capacity of plants and natural sinks. This results in much higher levels of carbon dioxide being trapped in the atmosphere as a greenhouse gas.

The main sources of human-induced carbon emissions include the use of fossil fuels for energy production, agriculture, transportation, and industry. According to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), in 2023, 73.8 percent of Türkiye’s total carbon emissions came from the energy sector, followed by agriculture at 12 percent, industrial processes and product use at 11.8 percent, and the waste sector at 2.3 percent.
