The chemical formula of carbon dioxide is CO₂ and it has no color or odor. Carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere mainly through the burning of fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas, and coal.
Especially after the Industrial Revolution, with the increase in the use of fossil fuels, there has been a significant rise in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The increase of carbon dioxide, one of the gases that creates the greenhouse effect, also contributes to the severity of the climate crisis.
According to a study conducted by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a historic increase occurred in the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere in 2022. The study showed that the global surface average of carbon dioxide rose in 2022 by 2.13 parts per million (ppm), similar to the increase over the past 10 years, reaching 417.06 ppm.
This figure is 50% higher compared to the period before the Industrial Revolution. With the announced data, the number of consecutive years in which carbon dioxide was measured at more than 2 ppm increase per year has reached 11.
