Russia’s newly appointed ambassador to Türkiye arrives in Ankara

Sergey Vershinin has been serving as deputy foreign minister since 2018

ANKARA 

Sergey Vershinin, recently appointed by Russian President Vladimir Putin to be ambassador to Türkiye, arrived in the Turkish capital on Thursday.

On US social media company X, the Russian Embassy in Ankara announced that Vershinin had arrived in Ankara.

He was welcomed at Esenboga Airport by embassy staff and officials from the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

Putin on Feb. 20 signed the decree appointing Vershinin, who had been serving as deputy foreign minister, ambassador to Ankara.

Last year, the Russian leader also signed a decree naming Russia’s former ambassador to Ankara, Aleksey Yerhov, the new ambassador to Uzbekistan.


A career in diplomacy

Born in 1954, Vershinin graduated in 1976 from the Foreign Ministry’s Moscow State Institute of International Relations, and in 1991 from the ministry’s Diplomatic Academy.

He held various positions in Russia’s diplomatic missions in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, and served as Russia’s ambassador to Algeria from 1999 to 2003.

Since 2004, he has held various posts at the Foreign Ministry and has been serving as deputy foreign minister since 2018.
