Syria condemns attack on Iraqi Kurdish leader’s residence

Damascus says strike on home of Nechirvan Barzani threatens security, stability in Iraq

ISTANBUL

Syria on Sunday condemned a “terrorist attack” targeting the residence of Nechirvan Barzani, the president of Iraq’s Kurdish Regional Government (KRG).

The Foreign Ministry said the attack was carried out by “outlaw groups” and described it as a threat to security and stability in Iraq and the wider region.

The ministry said the attack violated international law and reiterated Syria’s support for Iraq’s stability and territorial integrity.

It also rejected all forms of armed interference in Iraq’s internal affairs.

Barzani’s residence in Duhok was targeted Saturday in a drone attack. There were no casualties, while only limited property damage was reported near interception sites.

The attack came as hostilities in the region have escalated since the US and Israel launched a joint offensive against Iran on Feb. 28, killing more than 1,340 people to date, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Tehran has retaliated with waves of drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, inflicting casualties and infrastructure damage, while disrupting global markets and aviation.
