Power outage hits Lebanon after heat wave

Authorities say malfunction occurred due to extreme heat, humidity

BEIRUT/ISTANBUL

Lebanese authorities are struggling to restore electricity after a nationwide power outage since midnight, officials said on Sunday.

Lebanon’s state electricity company, Electricité du Liban (EDL), said in a statement that a malfunction occurred in a high-voltage transformer at the main Zouk power station in central Lebanon due to extreme heat and humidity, causing a nationwide blackout.”

It said technical teams are working to repair the fault to restore electricity as soon as possible.

According to an Anadolu reporter, residents now rely on small private generators until electricity is restored.

Lebanon has been hit by an extreme heat wave in recent days, with temperatures in some areas reaching 45°C (113 °F) and humidity levels nearing 80%, according to the Meteorological Department.

The country has long suffered from chronic power shortages for homes and institutions, with daily blackouts lasting several hours due to poor transmission networks and power generation plants.
