Officer, security personnel member killed in attack on checkpoint in Mosul, says Iraq

Circumstances of incident were not clarified, with no group claiming responsibility as yet

Iraq said late Saturday that an officer and a security personnel member were killed in an attack targeting a security checkpoint in Mosul, northwestern Iraq.

The Interior Ministry did not clarify the circumstances of the incident, and no group has claimed responsibility as yet.

In recent days, several Iraqi provinces have witnessed similar incidents amid ongoing hostilities in neighboring countries.

The region has been on alert since the US and Israel launched a joint offensive on Iran on Feb. 28, so far killing more than 1,340 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Tehran has retaliated with waves of drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, inflicting casualties and infrastructure damage while disrupting global markets and aviation.
